The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed aid to sugarcane farmers in Negros Occidental affected by the Red Stripe Soft Scale Insect (RSSI) infestation in Negros Island Region.

The two provinces in the region, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, have declared a state of calamity.

Spraying operations have been undertaken at sugarcane plantations in the hope of containing the infestation.

At least 600 farmers affected have received P10,325 each from DSWD.

“Ang initial na listahan na naibigay sa amin ay 11,000 farmers. Alam namin na lalaki pa ang numero kasi may hindi pa nava-validate na farmlands,” said DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian.

But several farmers said this isn’t enough.

“Padadalhan kami ng kemikal na spray pero hindi pa rin epektibo. Kulang ang 10,000,” said Renato Alcocisar.

Another farmer, Evangeline Bautitsta, said they might just end up replacing their crops.

“Totally damaged ang sa amin. Magtatanim na lang ako ng crops. Bahala na,” she said.

In Talisay City in Negros Occidental, at least 11,000 farmers are affected by the infestation.

The city government urged those affected to visit the City Hall to confirm they are in the list.

“Please come to the agriculture’s office sa City Hall and notify us,” said Talisay Mayor Rowena Lizares.

“May mga left out tayo na hindi naisama sa batch na ito kaya maglilista kami ulit,” said Dionela Madrona, head of the Talisay City Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
