An 18-wheel truck crashed into the railing of a bridge along the southbound lane of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Mexico, Pampanga, after the driver allegedly swerved to avoid a vehicle that suddenly cut into his lane, police said.

The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Authorities said the truck was traveling along Lane 2 of the expressway when a vehicle from Lane 3 allegedly cut in front of it.

The truck driver reportedly hit the brakes to avoid a collision but lost control of the vehicle. The truck skidded on the wet road, slammed into the bridge railing, and its front portion went over the edge of the bridge.

The driver and his helper sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Mexico Police Chief PMAJ. Narciso Zingalawa Jr. said the driver's initial statement pointed to another vehicle as the cause of the crash.

"Pabalik na sila… then pagdating sa may tulay na malapit sa may parte ng Sto. Tomas may iniwasan sila. Pero sa unang statement ng driver, parang may nag-cut sa kanila, nawalan siya ng kontrol. Then basa 'yung highway, 'yung daanan, ayun nag-slide siya hanggang mawalan siya ng kontrol at mapunta siya sa tulay at nahulog 'yung pinakaulo ng truck," he said.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the vehicle that allegedly cut in front of the truck and determine whether its driver may be held liable for the accident.
