A 42-year-old Indian national was shot dead while riding his motorcycle home to his rented house in Bacolod City evening on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with police investigating whether the killing was linked to his money-lending business.

The victim was attacked in Barangay Villamonte. Residents said they heard several gunshots before the man was found lying on the road with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Rebecca Subiate, a resident, said the area was quiet when the shooting happened.

“Nang time na iyon, parang wala kasing masyadong dumadaan diyan. Sabi, may mga limang putok ng baril,” she said.

Another resident, identified only as Ayne, said the alley where the shooting occurred has poor lighting and has been the site of previous crimes.

“Sa eskinita diyan, parang walang poste diyan. Kahit holdap nga, may nangyayari rin diyan,” she said.

Witnesses who spoke to the news team but declined to be interviewed on camera said the suspects were riding a motorcycle and were wearing helmets.

Residents also said the victim had no known conflicts in the neighborhood. One resident recalled that the victim had previously helped a woman who had collapsed in the area.

“Nang nakaraan nga, may babae diyan na hinimatay, tinulungan niya,” Edwin, another resident, said.

Police said the victim had been living in Bacolod City for only five months. Investigators are looking into whether his money-lending business could have been the motive behind the attack.

Deputy Chief, Lt. Raphael Palacios, of Bacolod City Police Station 4 said authorities are still determining the reason behind the shooting.

“Iyan pa ang tinitingnan natin na anggulo kung ano ang involvement, bakit binaril siya, or siguro sa mga business. I-determine pa natin,” Palacios said.

The victim's brother-in-law declined to be interviewed but said the family is processing the return of the victim's remains to India.
