Flooding has persisted for nearly a week in parts of Luna, La Union, as continuous rain brought by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, inundated homes and roads in several barangays.

Residents in Barangays Rimos 3, 4 and 5 have dealt with floodwaters reaching waist level in some areas. Fred Ariola, a resident, said the flooding has forced some families to evacuate and wait for better weather before returning home.

“Hindi pa bumababa ang baha. Mahirap, kapag baha nag-e-evacuate kami, baka sa Huwebes kami uuwi kung gaganda na ang panahon,” Ariola said.

Some roads in Luna have also been flooded. The local government plans to use pumps to remove water that has entered homes, while disaster response officials and the engineering office will inspect affected houses to determine further measures.

Luna DRRM Officer Lorenzo Consebido said authorities would assess the flooded houses.

“Doon sa mga flooded na bahay mag-iikot kami kasama ang engineering para malaman natin kung ano ang gagawin pa natin,” he said.

Flooding was also reported in other parts of La Union, including Aringay, which recorded a flash flood, as well as some areas in Bauang and San Fernando City.

La Union Provincial Information Officer John Martin said continued monsoon rains could trigger more flooding incidents.

“Itong patuloy na pag-ulan na nararanasan due to habagat may mga possible incident pa ng flooding na maitatala,” he said.

River systems across the province remain at normal levels, but authorities remain concerned that water levels could rise as heavy rains continue, particularly in mountainous areas.
