Bangsamoro Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua survived an ambush after his convoy was fired upon by unidentified gunmen in Barangay Dulangan, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, on Saturday afternoon, August 15, 2026.

In a statement, Macacua said his convoy  was attacked while returning from a public engagement in Barangay Gambar, Kabuntalan.

Macacua condemned the incident, calling it a “cowardly act,” and said it underscores the need to pursue lasting peace and maturity in the Bangsamoro region.

“While the heavy responsibility of public office carries inherent security risks, it is deeply heartbreaking that any individual or group would resort to violence to inflict harm,” Macacua said.

He also assured that the attack would not derail the government’s commitment to democractic progress, including the conduct of the first parliamentary elections next month.

“It strengthens our determination to ensure that the voice of the people, rather than the force of arms, dictates the future of our region,” he added.

Macacua urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading baseless speculations while authorities are investigating the incident.

Despite the attack, Macacua said he would continue to discharge his duties as chief minister and assured that the Bangsamoro Government remains resilient and fully operational.

“The solemn vow I took to serve the Bangsamoro people remains unshaken, and my commitment to this mission is as firm as ever,” Macacua said.

Cotabato City Mayor Bruce Matabalao said prior to the incident, Macacua attended a general assembly of the Bangsamoro Federalist Party in Barangay Gambar, Kabuntalan, where he took his oath as the party’s president and chairman.

Matabalao also condemned the incident.

“We condemn this act of violence without reservation. Any attack that places lives in danger is deeply troubling and has no place in the Bangsamoro,” Matabalao said.

Matabalao called on authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial probe and that those responsible must be identified and brought to justice.
