Residents in the Province of Northern Samar affected by the widespread flooding reached 354,924 as of November 24, 2023.
According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the residents come from 172 barangays.
The massive flood on November 21, 2023 destroyed totally some 1,514 houses. One of the worst hit is Barangay Ipil-Ipil as it is situated near a major waterway, the Catarman river.
Ipil-ipil Barangay Chairman Eva Arillo disclosed of around 400 houses destroyed in her barangay alone.
The affected barangays need more food supply and the immediate repair works on flood control structures, the PDRRMC said.
Victor Balanon, one of the affected individuals, said that flooding is not new to Catarman but the rainfall came in three successive days which led to the swelling of the river.
Further, Barangay Ipil-ipil is said to be a catch basin.
In addition, two were recorded dead (one in Northern Samar and another in Samar Province), while one was injured in Eastern Samar, according to a report of the Office of Civil Defense 8 on November 24, 2023.
