The proposal to set the price of eggs per kilo has generated mixed reactions from consumers in Dagupan City.
At the Malimgas Public Market in Dagupan, the price of eggs has gone up to P8 to P10 per piece. Vendors attribute the weekly price shifts to sources from Tarlac and neighboring provinces, with deliveries occurring thrice a week.
While eggs are sold typically per piece or per tray, Rep. Nicanor Briones of AGAP Partylist, the chairman of the Egg Council of the Philippines, has proposed adopting a per-kilo pricing strategy to mitigate potential discrepancies in size and pricing.
The proposed per-kilo pricing system could potentially provide a more transparent and standardized approach to egg purchases.
Arman Sinlao, an egg vendor, says the proposal may be worth trying.
"Subukan natin kung mabenta o hindi. Kung hindi, babalik sa tingi," he said.
Beth Gabriola sees the advantages of per-kilo pricing but for those with more significant budget flexibility.
"Mabuti ang per kilo kung may pera ka na marami," she said..
The egg industry stands to benefit from a per-kilo pricing model, according to Engr. Rosendo So, Chairman of the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura.
"Mas gusto nila ang per kilo kasi hindi lang nila ise-segregate lahat. Bahala na magbenta ng per kilo. Ang problema, ang consumer, hindi pabor sa kanila," So says.
One of those customers is Loretta de Vera who favors setting the price per piece.
"Mas gusto ko na per piraso kasi namamahalan kapag per kilo. Mas mabuti ang per piraso," she said.
