A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Lubang Island in Occidental Mindoro at 4:23 p.m. on December 5, 2023. According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake originated from tectonic activity at a depth of 60 kilometers.

No one was hurt during the quake but Inspection by the Lubang Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and local authorities found cracks and damage on various structures. Notable ones include extensive fissures on the posts of the Justice Hall and the Rural Health Unit.

Assessment and survey continues as Mayor Mike Orayani assured the public that they are prepared and informed about possible evacuations if necessary.

"Okay naman po kami at umiikot na po ‘yung team ng Engineering namin saka ‘yung mga uniformed personnel po naming para po sa assessment po ng lindol. Informed na rin ang lahat ng mga barangay, umiikot na rin sila sa kanilang mga area. Wala naman siyang damage so far naman wala pang reported. Sa aming mga kababayan, maghanda sakaling may paglikas o huwag naman sana mangyari ay laging handa at ipanalangin na lang natin na huwag nang maulit ulit," Orayani, said.

The earthquake was also felt in various locations in Southern Luzon. Intensity five was reported in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, while intensity four was felt in Makati, Quezon City, Taguig, Malolos, Meycauayan, Obando, Plaridel, Bulacan, Floridablanca, Pampanga, San Jose, Batangas, and Tagaytay City.

Intensity three was reported in Caloocan City, Pasig City, Cuenca, and Talisay, Batangas, Bacoor City, Gen Trias City, Cavite, Rodriguez, Rizal, and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.

In Batangas City, where intensity three was felt, students and employees evacuated buildings, and some establishments. The quake caused some electric posts to sway. No injuries were reported.

PHIVOLCS warns of possible aftershocks, reminding the public to stay alert and practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold" during earthquakes.
