The Lapu-Lapu City Social Welfare and Development Office has documented 275 families affected by a fire which razed through Sitio Sta. Maria, Barangay Pusok on December 12, 2023.

Over 80 families lost their homes completely, while the houses of three families were damaged partially.

Fifteen houses that accommodate “sharers” suffered total destruction, while 176 renters were also affected.

The Lapu-Lapu CSWDO, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development 7, conducted the profiling and validation of fire victims.

Displaced residents were given temporary shelter at the basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts of Barangay Pusok situated below the Marcelo Fernan bridge through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan said that the fire is the biggest that ever hit the city, by far.

Chan has already cancelled the Christmas Party for employees of the city government, saying it will not be right to hold it in view of the fire.

The money intended for the party will be given as aid to the fire survivors.
