At least 16 people were injured after a truck they boarded crashed into a fruit stand in Makilala, Cotabato on Monday, December 11, 2023.

Among those wounded were five minors onboard the truck including a man who happens to be present in the area.

A fruit vendor was also injured after the truck plowed the fruit stand while several fruit products scattered on the road.

Investigators said the victims were heading home after attending funeral rites when the truck’s brake reportedly malfunctioned and the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“Nawalan ng brake itong truck. Medyo paliko ‘yung ating daan, so na-overshoot po siya at tumama siya sa isang motorcycle driver na naka-park po doon at sumalpok siya sa fruit stand,” Makilala Municipal Police Station Chief, Lt. Col. Britz Sales, said.

The driver will likely face reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury and damage to property.

“Puwede din siyang kasuhan ng violation ng RA 4136 o Land Transportation and Traffic Code kasi nagpasakay siya sa truck ng pasahero (kahit bawal),” Sales added.
