A factory worker was killed in a fire that engulfed a plastic and foam factory in Barangay Tibungco, Davao City morning on Monday, December 18, 2023.

Police said the 19-year-old victim identified as Jeffrey Segovia was trapped inside the factory when the fire broke out.

“Ongoing sila sa ilang trabaho and kini siya nga individual is naga-file sila ng stock na foam kasi ang factory na involve ay manufacturing ng mga mattress and foam. So, naa siya didto sa likod na portion naga-file sila sa katong foams nila tapos pag-abot sa kalayo, paspas mikuyanap maong naglisod na siya og gawas,” Fire Inspection Shaira Borja of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Davao City said.

Investigators said fire spread quickly as the area was highly combustible.

“Isang injured na individual, nga naa siya'y second-degree burn sa iyang left nga bahin sa nawong. Kauban ni siya atong namatay nga nag-file og foam didto sa likod nga portion,” Borja added.

Meanwhile, several houses were razed to the ground after another fire hit a residential area in Barangay Vicente Duterte, Agdao District.

Authorities said the fire spread to some houses in Barangay Leon Garcia since most of the houses affected were made of light materials.

Investigation into the two incidents is ongoing, as of this writing.
