Charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, physical injuries, and damage to property will be filed against a truck driver who rammed onto motorcycles, a car, and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla town, Cebu.
A forward truck used for delivering live chickens from the southern town of Alcoy to the town of Compostela in north Cebu rammed onto two motorcycles, a car, and an SUV past 11 a.m. on December 16, 2023.
One of the motorcycle riders was declared dead on the spot, while his companion sustained injuries.
The victim was identified as Ian Edsel Barangan, a resident of the adjacent City of Naga in Cebu Province.
The three passengers of the car were rushed to the hospital after the impact crushed the front end of the vehicle.
The second motorcycle slid into and underneath the SUV also because of the impact. The rider and the companion were unscathed as well as the SUV driver.
The forward truck driver identified as Roel Pedrida also hit an electric pole and destroyed its concrete base which resulted in the bursting of a water pipeline.
According to witnesses, the truck was plying speedily at the outer lane and smashed onto the said vehicles.
However, Pedrida said that he was traveling on regular speed but the truck took on speed when it reached a declivitous portion of the road. He claimed the brakes of the truck had malfunctioned.
But Glenn Antigua, head of the Minglanila Traffic Command, said that they have called the attention of these truck drivers several times already for overspeeding.
Pedrida is believed to have been in a hurry to reach Compostela from Alcoy which is approximately 133 kilometers away.
