A reported argument between husband and wife in Vigan City ended in the couple’s unfortunate death.
Responders found the couple’s lifeless bodies at the house of the wife’s grandmother in Barangay San Pedro Sur where the woman, Esperanza Reyes, 26, sought refuge, and where her husband, Glemar, 25, allegedly followed and shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.
Esperanza sustained wounds in different parts of her body from a .45 caliber pistol.
The grandmother, Maria Jimenez, said the situation may have originated from an argument over a cellphone, which prompted Esperanza to take shelter at her house.
Esperanza has just returned to the Philippines from abroad.
“Nagtatalo sila sa cellphone… pinagsasalitaan niya (husband) kaya ayaw niya umuwi doon, kaya dito na siya tumuloy," Jimenez said.
Moments before the shooting, Glemar reportedly ordered their two children to buy burgers.
Based on initial investigation, jealousy may have been the cause of the conflict. Authorities are also looking into why Glemar was in possession of a firearm.
"Nag-emanate naman yun dun sa kanilang personal issues. Ang dini-determine na lang natin is yung pag-possess niya nung firearm," said PLTCOL. Reynando Pitpitan, acting chief of Vigan City Police Station.
Families mourned the couple in separate wakes because Esperanza’s family refused to have them together. This, even as Glemar reportedly said prior to the incident that he would want them to be buried together, Jimenez said.
"Ang gusto [ni Glemar ay] magkasama ang burol nilang mag-asawa pero ayaw namin dahil sa ginawa niya," she said.
