Transport group Transmision Piston-Southern Mindanao is set to hold a citywide transport strike in Davao City on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, to protest the government’s plan to phase out the traditional public utility jeepney (PUJ).

The group said more than 6,000 drivers will be affected by the phaseout of traditional jeepney under the government’s PUV Modernization Program and Davao Bus Project.

The deadline for the consolidation of franchises, which requires PUV operators to join a consolidated entity, is on December 31, 2023.

"Taman lang siya December 31 eh. So pwede mahitabo nga kolorum na ang tanang sakyanan nga magdagan sa dakbayan sa Davao. Ang ingon sa LTFRB, dili pa mahitabo sa 2024. Siguro mag-take effect sa 2025. Pwede bang makapangayo og memorandum nga mag-take effect ba next year? or the following years? So wala sila’y mga ing-ana nga gihatag sa atoa,” Transmision Piston-Southern Mindanao Spokesperson Larry Argilles said.

The group said around 80 percent of PUV drivers are expected to join the transport strike.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-Davao (LTFRB-11) has prepared for the possible effect of the transport strike.

"Close ang atong coordination with CTTMO right now and ugma, naa mi meeting sa office for the preparation sa hulga sa transport strike. So ato pud gipatawag ang mga bus operator for them to help us in case may mga ma-stranded nga pasahero,” LTFRB-11 Director Dondon Llanos said.
