After four decades and a year, the Junior Altas can call themselves champions.
In historic fashion, the Perpetual Junior Altas complete their dominant run in NCAA Season 100 with the championship trophy in the bag– their first-ever in history– after trouncing the Benilde-LSGH Greenies in Game 3 of the Finals, 101-67.
In front of a mammoth crowd at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Tuesday afternoon, the Junior Altas, helmed by newly minted 'Coach of the Year' Joph Cleopas, flexed a collective fire power that pulled off a demolition job befitting of a Perpetual comeback following their Game 2 loss.
Bicolano phenom Lebron Jhames Daep, who was earlier announced as the season's Most Valuable Player, was named the Finals MVP with averages of 13 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per contest during their three-game series. This completes Lebron's infinity stones of awards in Season 100, having also been elected to the Mythical Five and the All-Defensive Team.
The Junior Altas showed no mercy right from the get go, steadily mounting a 14-point lead in the first quarter (32-18) before shifting up gears and ultimately stunning the Greenies with a near-perfect game on both ends of the floor.
Five Perpetualites scored in double digits: Jan Roluna had 15 points, Icee Callangan 14, Jim Corpuz 13, Dan Rosales 12, and Lebron Daep 10, with Roluna’s 15-10-3-2 statline earning the high-flying guard from Nasipit, Agusan del Norte earning the Best Player of the Game nod.
Honorable mentions include team captain Jan Pagulayan and TJ Tabbuan whose nine points apiece were laced with six and seven big rebounds, respectively.
Their swarming defense, anchored by All-Defensive Team awardee Lebron Jhames, suffocated the Greenies from the perimeter to the paint, ultimately limiting the boys in green to only 33.3% field goal shooting.
Importantly, they stopped Greenies high scorer Guillian Quines, who casually dropped 29 and 35 in the first two Finals games, by throwing a variety of defensive schemes at him all game long. They held Quines to a still-impressive 18 points, but made him turn the ball over seven times.
Staying true to their "our defense is our offense" mantra, the Junior Altas forced the Greenies to commit a total of 20 total off 14 steals, on top of eight blocked shots.
The Junior Altas also asserted dominance in the paint with a 54-40 rebounding disparity. They as well lorded over in the assists department with 28 compared to the Greenies’ 11.
Helping Quines was graduating point guard Gian Gomez who contributed 17 points in a losing cause for the Renren Ritualo-coached squad.
With the NCAA Juniors Basketball trophy making its first ever stop in Las Piñas, the Junior Altas have not only redeemed their Season 99 finals loss, but also, and more importantly, set a precedent of unparalleled excellence for future generations of Junior Altas to build on.
