Powerhouse San Beda wasted no time in its quarterfinals clash with perennial Final Four contender LPU, torching the Pirates with 13 total threes en route to a lopsided 91-67 win as the Red Lions reached the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball final four.
Team captain Yukien Andrada accounted for six of the team’s 13 triples on an efficient 60% clip from beyond the arc to lead all scorers with 20 points. He laced his best player of the game performance with 3 rebounds and a steal.
Season 101’s leading scorer Janti Miller came off the bench but still managed to contribute 18 markers and six boards, while bulky big Bismarck Lina had a productive 15-13-2 stat line in only 15 minutes of playing time.
The Red Lions was by a mile the better rebounding team, outhustling the Pirates on the boards (59-32) and converting 23 second chance points compared to LPU’s seven. The Season 99 champions were also near-perfect from the free throw line, making all but one of their 17 foul shots.
Former NCAA Mythical Five member and LPU’s graduating team captain John ‘Ato’ Barba led the charge for the Gilbert Malabanan-coached squad with 13 points, two rebounds, and four dimes.
The 25-year-old LPU star, who helped steer the LPU men’s basketball team to three straight Final Four appearances (Season 98, 99, 100), turned emotional as he exited the game in the fourth with all but the final score settled, officially marking the conclusion of his storied NCAA career.
San Beda will face the winner of the do-or-die quarterfinals slugfest between defending champions Mapua and Season 100 finalists Benilde.
