Students and teachers from more than 40 universities and colleges from Region 1 gathered at Pangasinan State University (PSU) in Lingayen for the Timpuyog: 2025 ASEAN Conference, now on its third year.

Organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the two-day event carried the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” It aimed to celebrate diversity, strengthen regional collaboration, and promote internationalization among higher education institutions (HEIs).

The Ilocano word timpuyog translates to “unity” or “coming together.” The initiative serves as a platform for regional collaboration and capacity building, aligned with CHED’s goal of harmonizing efforts of HEIs in fostering global competitiveness while remaining rooted in local strengths.

A highlight of the conference was the awarding of Region I universities recognized in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI), including PSU for its notable placement this year. The recognition showcased the region’s growing impact on the international stage.

The conference also highlighted the role of education in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Presentations and competitions showcased faculty and student-led initiatives promoting SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

In the SDG Innovators Initiatives competition, PSU Sta. Maria Campus emerged as champion, while PSU Lingayen Campus secured fourth place.

Faculty and students also shared studies aligned with regional development and ASEAN cooperation.

“Internationalization is about building bridges that include everyone, ensuring that no one is left behind and creating systems that will last beyond our generation. Timpuyog is a story of resilience. Despite the storms, both literal and figurative, we made it here and that, to me, is victory,” Dr. Christine Ferrer, CHED Region 1 Director, said.
