Rita Daniela: a singer from a family of dancers

A granddaughter of the late actor/tap dancer Teroy de Guzman, Rita dedicates her dance-R&B album to all Filipino dancers.

Rita Daniela was declared grand champion of QTV’s PopStar Kids and launched her career as a singer. Unknown to most, however, is that this young artist of GMA Records actually hails from a family of dancers.

“Bata pa lang kasi ako, bonding na namin ng family ko sa mother’s side dancing talaga. Kasi kinukuwento sa akin noon na silang magkakapatid, tinuruan silang sumayaw and ‘yun ‘yung bonding nila,” she said in an interview with GMANetwork.com.
“‘Yun ang naging bonding hanggang sa nagkaroon na ng bagong generation, hanggang sa eto na, kami na,” she continued.
Rita shared how her kin get into a dance showdown every time they have family gatherings, emphasizing, “Ganun talaga kasaya. Doon namin na-e-express ‘yung happiness namin, ‘yung love namin sa isa’t is. Through dancing.”
In a family who can do tap or dance hip-hop and contemporary, who does she idolize the most?
“Of course my lolo, Teroy de Guzman,” was Rita’s answer.
“Hindi ko siya naabutan, nakikita ko lang ‘yung clips niya sa YouTube and pinapanood ‘yun sa amin ng tito at tita ko. Grabe, sobrang galing pala talaga sumayaw ng lolo ko, 'tsaka tap dancing talaga. Alam ko hindi lahat nakakagawa noon,” she said, referring to her grandpa who was also both an actor and a tap dancer.
Rita proudly mentioned how she also gives recognition to dancers through her dance-R&B album.

She stated, “Alam kong hindi lang mahuhusay na singers ang meron lang dito sa Pilipinas, kung hindi rin dancers. Alam ko mas hindi nabibigyan sila ng chance or ng opportunity to show the world kung gaano kagaling, kung gaano kahusay ang mga mananayaw dito sa Pilipinas.”
“I dedicate my album to them, to all the dancers. Kung iisipin mo, mas mahirap sumayaw kasi talagang passion lang ‘yan eh. ‘Yun talaga bumubuhay sa’yo, passion talaga,” she added.
