What is 'Glass Hair' and how to achieve it?

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

Step aside, glass skin. There's a new “glass” trend in town and it's all about hair.

The term “glass hair” was first coined by online magazine Refinery29 which refers to the way locks are cut sharply giving your hair a glass effect. So no, it doesn't refer to using glass to cut your locks but the effect it gives.

And you may have seen it around Instagram. It's that extra shiny look coming from famous Hollywood A-listers like Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and Rihanna.

According to an article, glass hair has been a staple in the black community for years but under a different name.

This was validated by celebrity hairstylist Cynthia Alvarez, “Glass hair is not new to the beauty industry.

“It's actually referred to as silk press by beauty professionals and has been around for years.”

She adds that the style works on all hair types and textures making it one of the quickest way to update your look and still look chic and put together.

Nowadays, the style is making its way on our shores and we see a few of our favorite celebs and personalities like Kyline Alcantara, Liz Uy, and Jessy Mendiola sporting the look.

Obviously, the celebrities mentioned above didn't style their hair on their own and none of us have a hairstylist on call when we feel like having a new 'do.

So is it easy to get glass hair at home or is it impossible to recreate the look?

Well, it's a bit complicated as you need to buy a few products before attempting the polished, sleek style -- and we're taking a cue from Chris Appleton (Kim K's hairstylist) for this.

First of all, you need to wash and blow dry your hair in sections from the roots to the ends. Once dry, you need to use a straightener and straighten your hair.

Then comes the shine serum. According to Chris, he uses Color Wow Pop & Lock to finish everything off and uses hairspray to remove unwanted baby hairs.

But since we live in the Philippines, we suggest going for your trusty Vitress or Human Nature smoothing hair serum as it does the same trick.

Catch you on the sleek side.
