Why do you still need to moisturize if you have an oily skin?

By Jansen Ramos

In the Philippines, where "summer" happens all year long, we tend to skip moisturizer to avoid feeling like in a frying pan, especially when you have oily skin.

It's a basic skincare regimen that can't be ignored because it does not just give the skin much-needed hydration but also serves as a protective layer.

In our quick chat with Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) Public Relations & External Affairs officer Dr. Zharla Gulmatico-Flores during the Cetaphil National Healthy Skin Mission last August 16 at SM Makati, she explains why is it necessary to moisturize even if you have oily skin.

She says, "You lose water every day because when you're exposed to sun, may extreme changes of weather, malamig tapos mainit, 'yung water mo nawawala, so you have to really moisturize your skin."

She further explains, "'Yung moisturizer 'yung ina-address niya 'yung hydration, 'yung water inside your skin, not your oil. So it does not mean 'pag nag-moisturizer ka, lalong magiging oily 'yung skin mo."

Dr. Flores then noted that it's important to use the right kind of moisturizer based on your skin type.

She says, "Actually, you just feel greasy kasi 'yung pinili mong moisturizer ay mali. Minsan kasi may mga moisturizer tayo na oil-based, petroleum-based, 'yun talaga 'yung makaka-greasy lalo ng skin mo. Pero if you will choose 'yung mga water-based, oil free-based, those are very good for your skin."

Moreover, Dr. Flores also shared that moisturizing is a vital part of the skincare routine because it keeps the skin supple and youthful.

She concluded, "You don't get old easily kasi it can somehow form plump doon sa skin kasi naha-hydrate siyang mabuti so parang 'yung skin mo lalo siyang bumabata."

So as long as you're young, why not invest in a good moisturizer so your skin will thank you later?
