Local art and design competitions where you can win up to Php500,000

The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) has two ongoing art and design contests, the Lapu-Lapu National Monument Design Competition and the Quincentennial Art Competition, with a grand prize of Php300,000 and Php500,000 respectively.

The two competitions were initiated in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan, which occurred on April 27, 1521.

Lapu-Lapu National Monument Design Competition

The Lapu-Lapu National Monument Design Competition is looking for the best design for the new monument, which will be enshrined at the atrium of the Lapu-Lapu Memorial Shrine and Museum in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

The monument design must incorporate the following elements:

1. Classical style

2. A 360-degree artistic view

3. The monument must contain these requirements:

-The main character of the monument should be Lapu-Lapu;
-There must be some warriors integrated into the monument; and
-Pedestal complementing the monument

4. Design should be based on historical, archeological, and cultural research

The designs of the five finalists will be exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, and the grand prize winner and selected design will bring home Php300,000, inclusive of 20% tax per government regulation.

Quincentennial Art Competition

The Quincentennial Art Competition, on the other hand, is a painting competition commemorating the first circumnavigation of the world led by Ferdinand Magellan, the victory of Lapu-Lapu and other heroes during the Battle of Mactan, and the introduction of Christianity to the Filipinos through the baptism of Datu Humabon and Queen Juana of Cebu.

There are four themes that eligible participants may draw inspiration from for their painting: sovereignty, magnanimity, unity, and legacy.

All submitted entries will be showcased in a published catalog of artworks.

Four winners (one for each theme) will win Php500,000 each and eight runners-up (two per theme) will take home Php50,000 each. All prizes are subject to 20% tax per government regulation.

Eligibility and submission of entries

For both contests, participants must be Filipino citizens who are 18 years old or older at the time of their submission of entry and has a valid Tax Identification Number (TIN) issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

NQC Members, National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) employees, and officials, competition organizers, as well as their relatives by consanguinity or affinity up to the second degree (for the Quincentennial Art Competition) and third civil degree (for Lapu-Lapu monument design contest) are not eligible to participate in the said competitions.

Submission of entries for both contests has been extended up to January 6, 2021, at 12 noon.
