Camille Co on breastfeeding: 'It was such a toe-curlingly painful experience'

Fashion designer-turned-vlogger and first-time mom Camille Co-Koro shared her own experience on breastfeeding during Philips Avents's webinar titled “#UpfortheChallenge, Part 2: Conversations on Motherhood in the New Normal” last April 21.

Camille admitted that she had worries about breastfeeding even before her daughter Sienna Elea was born.

She said, “When Sienna wasn't out yet, I was already checking my boobs out. (laughs)

“Siyempre new mom. So, I was like, 'My boobs did not grow at all. Will I even have milk?'

Camille also recalled the advice that expert birthing coach Chiqui Brosas-Hahn gave her.

“I think I remember I had a class with Ms. Chiqui and I think I actually asked her like 'Will I actually have breast milk come out when my baby is here?'

“And I remember her telling me 'You have to go into it with the right mindset. You can't go into it thinking 'Oh, I'm not gonna have breast milk. I'm not gonna be able to feed my baby.'”

And although she's learned how to deal with her anxiety about having enough breast milk, Camille revealed that the first few days of the actual breastfeeding wasn't a very pleasant experience for her.

“And then finally when I started breastfeeding, the first few days, it was such a toe-curlingly painful experience.

“I know that everyone says, like all my mommy friends would always warn me that 'No, labor is nothing. Breastfeeding is even more painful.'

“So, I'm like, 'Okay.' But then when you actually experience it, like no words can describe how I felt that time.

“The mother's love was so strong. It was really, the first few days were really so painful but then I was just thinking to myself, 'You know what? I just have to power through it.'

Fortunately, Camille's determination to tough it out eventually paid off and motherhood is now gradually turning into a more positive experience for her.

She said educating herself about pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, as well as being well-equipped, helped her face the challenges of being a first-time mom.

“I have the right tools. I prepared for this. I know what a good latch looks like.

“Like I really read up on all these things and really tried to attend as much classes as I could.

“So now it's just like a step-by-step process but things are turning into a more positive note, not as toe-curling anymore and I'm more excited of like what's to come.”
