Ways to modernize your Filipiniana gown

Whether you're attending next year's State of the Nation Address (SoNA) or your best friend's wedding, the Filipinana wear is almost always a must-have for every Filipina's closet.

But like any woman in their early 20s, looking for ways to modernize the cultural gown can be tricky if all you have at hand are ready to wear items.

So, if you don't have a couturier on speed dial, we've rounded up ways to pull off the Filipiniana look in this day and age.

1. Think about the weather

Just like any form of fashion, you have to feel as comfortable. So it's best to consider the weather or the humidity of the venue before settling in on the fabric you're about to choose. Comfort should always be a major consideration when choosing the outfit of your choice.

For hot summer days, you can opt to choose linen fabrics. Pret-a-porter line, “Araw” calls it the “Filipiniana pang araw-araw” as they use light fabrics like linen that are breezy and comfortable enough to be worn with jeans perfect for casual days.

But for a more formal setting, it's important to note if you'll be settling in on a highly-airconditioned room. That way, you can see whether or not you could get away with silk pant suits or trousers like Audrey Tan Zubiri.

2. Go for Piña fabrics

The classic Piña fabric will automatically give Filipiniana-vibes at the drop of the hat. But aside from that, it will also keep you cool as it's texture is lightweight and sheer.

So, if you're on a rut as to what to buy on your quest to find the modern Filipiniana dress, the best option to go for is to stick with the indigenous fabric and pair it with a Western design.

3. Consider separates

A practical way to wear a Filipiniana gown is to consider going for separate pieces so you can continually reuse it. By mixing and matching it with other materials - say, a Piña top paired with bell-bottom trousers - you can rewear it for separate occasions (and no one would even know the difference!).

4. Go for pencil skirts

Voluminous skirts are out and pencil skirts are in!

To modernize your Filipiniana dress, keep things very simple and minimal by going for fitted skirts so you can look chic and put together. Don't forget to wear your best stiletto and show off your legs - a definite stand out among the throng of women wearing long skirts.

5. Keep accessories, hair, and makeup to a minimum

Similarly, go for minimal accessories to highlight your face. Keep your hair back in a low pony for a sleek look.

Pearls always look great when paired with your modern terno. But, if you want to take it up a notch diamonds are also perfect.
