Sneakers and recycling

Let's think green! Check out these environmentally-friendly footwear made out of recyclable materials.

Let's face it, waste management in the Philippines still needs a lot of improvement.

In a report released by the Philippine Senate Economic Planning Office, the solid waste management remains to be a major challenge in the Philippines.

Moreover, the same report pointed out that the country faces enormous problems like improper waste disposal, inefficient waste collection, and the lack of disposal facilities.

Another glaring problem is that in 2016 alone, the National Capital Region (NCR) generated 9,212.92 tons of waste per day according to the data provided by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC).

How do we deal with this problem?

Well, some companies around the world are slowly changing the way they produce their products. The retail sector creates a lot of trash every year. But now, footwear companies are helping solve our growing waste problem through innovation.

In fact, these companies have made a huge leap by pledging to use recyclable materials in producing sneakers and rubber shoes.

Here's some of these eco-friendly shoes available in the market today.

Last year, German sportswear brand Adidas introduced their Futurecraft Loop shoes. This piece serves as the company's bold statement in tackling waste and pollution.

The Futurecraft Loop is a performance running shoe made out of 100% recyclable material.

In 2019, Adidas also made a commitment of producing 11 million pairs of shoes containing recycled ocean plastic.

What's more, the company is targeting that by 2024 they will only use recycled polyester in every product they will produce.

Now, that's a company with a serious green initiative.

Air Vapormax 2020

Adidas rival Nike will not be outdone, since the leading sportswear brand also released the Nike Air Vapormax 2020--a low-impact sneaker for the eco-warrior in you.

Why so?

In an article written on purpose.nike.com, the Air sole contains 75% recycled materials and the heel counter is made from recycled compact discs.

The Air Vapormax 2020 do really stand out especially with its color combination.

Every time you wear these candy-colored sneakers, you will be constantly reminded that each pair is one big help to Mother Earth with the amount of recycled materials used in creating them.

What is cooler than a person wearing a signature Chuck Taylor from Converse?

Well, a person wearing a Chuck Taylor from their Renew Collection.

Converse has decided to also join the green initiative bandwagon by offering this Renew collection, wherein the shoe's upper canvas is made out of 100% recycled polyester made from used plastic bottles.

In an article posted in spin.ph, the iconic streetwear brand teamed up with U.K.-based recycling company First Mile to source plastic bottles from developing countries, which were then broken into flakes, melted, and processed into fabric.

And adding a bit of cool-factor is that each sneaker features the phrase "Life's too short to waste."

Multinational sportswear company Puma has also vowed to help efforts to reduce trash by collaborating with the organization First Mile.

The mission of the organization is to strengthen micro-economies in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti by collecting discarded plastic bottles to create sustainable jobs and reduce pollution.

Hypebeast.com reported that Puma is offering pairs combining recycled materials alongside its much-loved LQDCELL technology for a variety of boldly colored, comfy and most importantly sustainable sneakers.

With these eco-friendly footwear, you can definitely remain stylish and be a supporter of the green initiative in reducing waste and creating a sustainable environment for everybody.
