Michael Cinco receives the Noble Hero Award in UAE

By Racquel Quieta

World renowned Filipino fashion designer, Michael Cinco, adds another feather to his cap, as he received the Noble Hero Award (Dakilang Bayani Award) on Friday, June 11.

The Dakilang Bayani Award is the highest honor given by the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai to modern-day heroes.

The recognition is traditionally given to Pinoy expats in the UAE who have exceptional achievements in their respective fields, and also have rendered great contributions and selfless service to the community.

This year, the legendary Michael Cinco was among the seven awardees of the Dakilang Bayani Award. Other awardees were Dr. Mary Jane Alvero, Ms, Lalaine Chu-Benitez, Ms. Josie Conlu, Ms, Fevie Laurilla, Mr. Ace Quijada, and Mr. Angel Tesorero.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Consulate, a day before the celebration of the 123rd Philippine Independence.

Last year, Michael was also included in People Asia's People of the Year 2020, alongside other Pinoy achievers such as beauty expert Dr. Vicki Belo, Air Asia's Sheila Romero, and actress Kathryn Bernardo.

Michael had humble beginnings in his province, Samar, before trying his luck here in Manila.

He eventually flew to Dubai and founded his namesake brand in 2003.

Since then he has dressed royals, beauty queens, and international superstars such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Sofia Vergara, Mila Kunis, Carrie Underwood, Zayn Malik, Nick Jonas, Chris Brown, and Jason Derulo.

He recently made headlines after he had a spat with Miss Universe-Canada, Nova Stevens's team, after they allegedly criticized the gowns that Michael created and insinuated that the designer may have sabotaged their candidate's chances of making the semi-finals of Miss Universe 2020 pageant.

Michael has clapped back by defending his creations and suggested that they should stop tapping Filipino designers and instead showcase the works of the designers from their home country.

Many have since expressed support for the Dubai-based Filipino designer, and Nova Stevens has also apologized for the comments her pageant team has made.
