Meet the Gen-Z and millennial co-chairs of the 2021 Met Gala

By Racquel Quieta

Fashion's big night out, the annual Met Gala, is set to return on September 13 (Monday) with a more intimate red-carpet event to open the first of its two-part exhibition, and they've tapped Gen Z and millennial stars as co-chairs this year.

The said lineup of young and diverse celebrity co-chairs is actually the youngest set of co-chairs in Met Gala history, which includes 26-year-old actor Timothee Chalamet, 23-year-olds tennis star Naomi Osaka and poet Amanda Gorman, and 19-year-old singer Billie Eilish.

This move is reportedly part of the organizers' efforts to attract Gen Z audiences, much like how the Gen Z sports such as skateboarding was included in the Tokyo Olympics' program.

Timothee Chalamet and Billie Eiish are both known for their unique and avant-garde styles, while Naomi Osaka is known to be a favorite designer muse and currently one of the best-dressed athletes.

Meanwhile, poet Amanda Gorman has not only been put in the spotlight after reading her moving poem The Hill We Climb during US President Joe Biden, but she's also taken the spotlight last May as the first poet ever to become Vogue's cover star.

Aside from these young co-chairs, designer Tom Ford (head of Instagram Adam Mosseri) and Costume Institute booster and Condé Nast chief content officer Anna Wintour were also announced as honorary chairs.

The overall theme of the two-part exhibition is American fashion. For the first part titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which will open on September 18, Vogue announced that the dress code for its opening gala happening on September 13 is American Independence.

The second part with the theme, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, will happen on the usual date of the Met Gala, which is the first Monday of May (May 5 in 2022).

Both exhibitions will be available for viewing until September 5, 2022.
