The Met Gala returns this 2021 with a two-part exhibition

By Racquel Quieta

The Met Gala, one of the most anticipated annual fashion events, is set to return this 2021 in a special two-part exhibition that'll definitely make up for the lost time.

Last year, due to the restrictions imposed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Met Gala was postponed and later on canceled entirely.

Although the 2020 exhibition with the theme 'About Time: Fashion and Duration' didn't push through, people were still able to view it at the museum with strict safety protocols in place.

Moreover, stars and personalities who were set to hit the Met Gala red carpet last year had to make do with showcasing online from their homes what would've been their outfits for the much-awaited benefit.

And some celebrities also posted throwback photos of their unforgettable Met Gala looks in the past.

For 2021, the overall theme of the two-part exhibition will be American fashion.

The first part is specifically titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" and will take place on September 18 this year.

This is an unprecedented first in Met Gala history since the event dubbed as “fashion's biggest night out” usually happens in May.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City described the first part as an exploration of “modern vocabulary of American style emphasizing the expressive qualities of dress and deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.”

The galleries will reportedly feature a fictional American home with overlapping transparent walls, where samples of 20th- and 21st-century fashion will be showcased.

Meanwhile, the second part's theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” and will follow the traditional schedule of the Met Gala, which is the first Monday of May. In 2022, that would be May 5th.

The second part of the exhibition seeks to explore “the development of American fashion as they relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces.”

Both exhibitions will be open for viewing until September of 2022, with its closing date is scheduled on September 5th.

Moreover, the highly anticipated benefit evening, which usually marks the opening of the exhibit will reportedly push through in September.

Plans for the benefit are still tentative and are highly dependent on pending government guidelines, but it'll most likely be a more intimate version of past Met Balls.

Aside from being a glamorous event where celebrities and personalities get to walk the red carpet in the most stylish and outrageous creations of designers, the Met Gala, or Met Ball, is the Costume Institute's primary source of funds and they've most likely suffered a blow due to the cancellation of it last year.

But with two exhibitions in the works, which are only eight months apart, things are starting to look up for the Costume Institute this year.
