4 Dalgona recipes to try aside from coffee

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

If you're up to date, you'll know that Dalgona coffee is now Instagram's favorite drink. But for those unaware, this beverage, which went viral on TikTok, is originally from South Korea and is made by whisking instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water until your arms hurt.

But, for non-coffee drinkers who don't want to be left out from the trend here are some more ideas to try.

1. Dalgona Milo

Of course, an alternative to coffee would have to be chocolate --- everyone's favorite childhood drink and almost a household essential. So whip out your Milo powder drink which is a great substitute for hot chocolate.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp Milo Powder
  • 2 tbsp white or brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp hot water
  • 1 egg white
  • Milk
  • Ice (optional if you wish to have it hot)

Steps

Combine Milo powder, sugar, egg white, and hot water in a bowl and whisk until it's light and fluffy. Then, pour the mixture into a glass of milk and ice. Enjoy!

2. Dalgona Matcha

For the Matcha lovers, you can opt for your very own Dalgona beverage too. However, this will require a few additional steps and ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 1 egg white
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ water
  • Milk
  • Ice

Steps

Beat the egg white until it starts to froth and get fluffy. And then, boil the sugar and water together on low heat. Let it simmer for five minutes until it becomes a syrup. Drizzle the syrup into the egg white froth until it becomes glossy. Add in matcha powder and mix until the matcha is blended and smooth. Place all the products in a glass of milk and enjoy.

3. Dalgona Milk Tea

Did someone say milk tea? Here's another spin sans the bubble tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 tea bag
  • 400g water
  • 350g sugar
  • 15g baking soda
  • Milk
  • Ice

Steps

Bring tea bag, 100g of water, and 50g of sugar to a boil until the syrup is slightly thickened. Separately, bring 300g of water and 100g of sugar to a boil. Once the syrup is golden, add 15g of baking soda and stir until the syrup turns dark brown. Set this aside and let it harden.

Once hardened, break the mixture into crumbs using a spoon. Fill a glass with milk, pour the liquid containing the tea bag, and finish it off with the crumbs.

4. Dalgona Strawberry Milk

Fluffy and fruity? Yes, please!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp instant coffee powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • A handful of strawberries (mashed)
  • Milk

Steps

Whisk coffee powder, sugar, and water to a creamy texture. Place strawberries into a cup and pour milk gently. Add the froth on top and mix it!
