The months of August until December are considered lanzones season.

During the month of October, the province of Camiguin comes alive to celebrate the Lanzones Festival.

Tourists flock to the island every year to experience the week-long festivities and to taste the province's sweet lanzones.

But with threats of COVID-19 still lingering, the city government has decided to bring the event online instead of canceling the occasion altogether.

Thus, the 41st Lanzones Festival - running until October 25 - can be accessed on Facebook and other social media platforms where people can see this year's activities and even shop online.

To mark the festival, we pay tribute to the beloved lanzones with some quick facts about the fruit…

The scientific name of lanzones is Lansium domesticum.

The fruit originated in western Malaysia and grown in tropical Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Here in the Philippines, the lanzones tree is one of the preferred trees to plant for reforestation.

There are different varieties of Lanzones, namely, jolo, longkong, paete, and duku. Each one differs in size, tree form, and even in appearance.

A lanzones tree can live for 100 years, and can bear fruit for 10 or 30 years.

A lanzones fruit has many health benefits including remedy for ulcers, relieving diarrhea, regulating blood sugar levels, and treatment for fever. It also boosts the immune system.

Some of the vitamins and minerals found in lanzones are vitamin B1 and B2, iron, phosphorous, calcium, protein, magnesium, and carbohydrates.

A lanzones tree typically measures 15 to 30 cm high.

Lanzones is the main agricultural product of Camiguin. What's more, Camiguin-grown lanzones is considered as among the sweetest in Asia.
