WATCH: Angelu de Leon's fight with Bell's Palsy

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

If you're a '90s baby, you might be familiar with the name Angelu de Leon who became one of the most prominent faces in Philippine television.

But behind the cute dimpled face and an acting career that lasted decades, the popular '90s actress was actually diagnosed with the condition Bell's Palsy.

In Pinoy MD, Angelu opened up about the first time she was diagnosed.

“Early 2000s yun eh.

“Naalala ko, gumising ako, nag-freshen up, tapos nag-breakfast. Nung nagbe-breakfast ako katabi ko yung mommy ko. Uminom ako ng tubig tapos nang pag-inom ko biglang nag-squirt 'yung tubig.”

She immediately asked her mom if there was something unusual with her face and then looked in the mirror, noticing a slight heaviness on the right side of her face.

At once, she consulted a neurologist and have concurred that it might have been Bell's Palsy. It was due to the aircon that was blasting cold air directly at her face while she was sleeping the night before.

Luckily for her, it lasted only for a week.

However, in 2016, the medical condition appeared once again.

After traveling to Europe, Angelu's family decided to visit Boracay where she noticed that her left eye had closed on its own.

Thinking nothing serious of it, she then noticed a slight heaviness on the left side of her face seven days later while hearing Mass with a friend.

She once again consulted with a neurologist and the doctor recommended that she take an MRI exam to rule out the possibility of stroke.

Turns out it was Bell's Palsy once again and the condition lasted for two months.

According to Angelu, “Grabe 'yung effect niya sa tao kasi instant deformity 'yung makikita mo, na you would have things in your head na babalik ba? Emotionally, kailangan mong tatagan 'yung sarili mo kasi hindi mo alam e.

“Hindi mo talaga alam kung babalik ba siya ng normal or will it stay like that forever."

During her treatment, the actress continued doing work in the Kapuso network where she starred in shows like Encantadia and Mulawin vs Ravena.

According to WebMD, Bell's Palsy is a condition in which the muscles on one side of our face become weak or paralyzed. It affects only one side of the face at a time, causing it to droop or become stiff.
