Why you should take a social media detox like these celebs

Social media user numbers continue to grow every day. And according to a study, an average person spends at least an hour and 40 minutes per day looking at their favorite social media sites and apps.

Just because it is appealing to our culture, that doesn't mean that it's always good for you. So it helps to detox once in a while.

Here, we've broken down a few reasons and taken a cue from these celebs on why you should take a detox too.

Veer away from the social comparison cycle

Scientists have discovered that most people who use social media end up comparing themselves to the lives of everyone they know and this has a serious impact on one's self-esteem.

TODA One I Love star Kylie Padilla realized this during her momentary breakdown.

In a post dated in 2018, the actress says, “I had an overwhelming episode of overthinking just now. To the point where I started to feel down.

“Scrolling on the internet did not help. Looking through everyone's highlight reel hits harder when you're having an episode.”

Break away from the cycle and try to reconnect with all the awesome things in your life. You'll eventually realize you're worth and that is more than the comments and likes combined you get from Instagram.

You'll stop being competitive

Even if you aren't aware of it, sometimes social media brings out your competitive side. This is because the main basis of social media networks like Instagram is to attract attention to your posts.

And sometimes, each comment or like becomes a measure of how popular you are.

The same scenario can be said with Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.

In a post on Instagram, she writes why she took a quick break from the photo-sharing site.

“I love connecting with you all on these platforms but also need to check myself and recognize when I begin to put too much "worth" into what I post and its feedback in comments and likes.”

This type of competitiveness isn't healthy because it can cause anxiety and depression. Take a mental health check and step away from your phone even just for a while.

Improve your mood and gather your thoughts

Studies have discovered that the more time you spend on social media, the more you are likely to feel stressed out or unhappy.

If this becomes your mood, maybe it's time to give social media detox a try and gather your thoughts and goals about yourself.

During one of her social media breaks, Bihag actress Yasmien Kurdi writes, “It was my intention to stay away from social media for a time, for me to give a thought about my personal life and career.”

After a month-long hiatus, she bounced back and surprised everyone by graduating as Magna Cum Laude from Arellano University with a degree in Political Science.

Move on from the past

Sometimes leaving social media behind for a while can give you the space you need to stop obsessing and actually move on with your life - whether it's from a bad experience or a really bad ex.

This is what Heart Evangelista did when she found out she lost her babies back in 2018.

In a heartbreaking post, she writes, “I hope you all understand that I'll be taking some time off but your support and kind words will be felt, even if I'm not able to reply.

“I'm not looking for answers, just peace.”

And the rest, as they say, is history. Heart made a complete comeback when she flew to Paris for Harper's Bazaar US, establishing her title as a true fashion icon.
