Nowadays, opening your power bill can be much scarier than watching a horror film. Since most people are working and studying at home, electric consumption in households has definitely skyrocketed.

If paying your bills has been hurting your pocket, then it's time to take action and employ strategies to save up on your electric bills, such as using solar power.

GMANetwork.com got in touch with Jochen Staudter, a.k.a. Solar Joe, managing director of PHILERGY German Solar, to learn more about the considerations, cost, and process of installing solar panels in households and businesses.

Things to consider

Many people have misgivings about installing solar panels at home or in a commercial building because there's a common misconception that a large construction or special provision is needed.

However, Staudter debunked this wrong notion by saying, “Most residential solar installations are conducted within one day and the solar system can neatly be integrated into the existing building design. Thus, building-wise, no specific considerations have to be taken.”

But, according to Staudter, in order to determine the optimal solar system size apt for your home, the solar supplier would need the following information:

1. How much of your electric bill do you want to reduce through solar energy?
2. How do you usually consume electricity (e.g. when do you run your air-cons)?
3. How much shadow-free roof space do you have available?
4. How much budget can you allocate for solar?

Budget and warranty

To give interested people an idea of how much installation of solar panels usually costs, Staudter provided a ballpark figure.

“For an average middle-sized residential household with an electric bill of P5,000 a month, an investment of around P150k is required to achieve an optimal solar system capacity.”

Having solar panels in your home or business can help you save a lot on your electric bills in the long run.

So, if you're really eager to go solar, it's best to choose a certified and experienced solar company that can cater to your needs.

Finally, Staudter advised, “It is very important to choose a certified and experienced solar company that can cater to your needs and be supplied with quality components and services to fully enjoy the solar system for over 25 years, that is how extensive warranties of a solar system can be!"

Consult with your chosen solar power system supplier and ask for a quotation, so you can make an investment strategy and finally start your journey into using solar energy.
