Fun things to do with your kids this Halloween

By Racquel Quieta

This year's Halloween celebration is certainly going to be different from what many people have been accustomed to. For starters, trick or treating and Halloween parties are definitely cancelled -at least in most parts of the Philippines--since people still need to stay at home due to the ongoing pandemic. So, this 2020, kids would have to celebrate Halloween at home.

While having a Halloween celebration at home might not sound appealing initially, there are actually some fun things you can do with your children to make it special. Below are some activities you can try this Halloween.

1. Decorate with your kids.

If you haven't put up Halloween decors at home, then you can turn it into a fun bonding activity with your kids. Allow them to have creative input on how your Halloween decors will look like, so they can really enjoy it.

If you need design ideas or your kids want to create décors inspired by their favorite cartoon characters and movies, Disney has printable templates and DIY crafts guides.

2. Make Halloween treats together.

Another great way to bond with your kids is to create Halloween treats together. To make this task easy and fun, you can purchase DIY kits online such as Cupcakes by Sonja's DIY cupcake kit and the DIY Halloween cookie kit by Kink Cakes.

3. Play dress up!

The Halloween experience just isn't complete without donning scary, funny, and creative costumes. Play dress up with your kids to make them feel like they're still going trick or treating this year. You can buy amazing costumes for your kids online.

4. Binge-watch horror series or movies.

Kids love a good scare, so now is the perfect time to have a movie marathon with them. Just make sure your kids can handle the scary stuff in the movies you're about to watch. If they're not so much into the super scary stuff, perhaps something like the supernatural horror film 'The Craft: Legacy' will appeal more to them.

5. Try virtual escape rooms or participate in virtual Halloween parties.

Virtual escape rooms such as Mystery Manila's Escape Zoom and Breakout Philippines's VERA will certainly be enjoyable for your adolescent children. If your kids are too young to be solving mysteries, perhaps you can join virtual Halloween parties on Zoom organized by your community or family.

See, there are actually plenty of ways to make this year's at-home Halloween celebration special and fun. Just don't forget to take lots of photos and videos with your family, so you'll have mementos from one of the most unforgettable Halloween celebrations you'll ever have. Happy Halloween, mga Kapuso!
