Visiting museums is a great way to expand one's knowledge of the past. It also instills an appreciation of history and culture visually and entertainingly.

Now we always hear about the big museums like the National Museum of the Philippines or the Ayala Museum.

But did you know that we have many small museums that are as equally interesting? We list down some of these venues housing unique and niche themes for curious guests to explore.

The Money Museum

The Museo ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has a dedicated space that houses the country's various currencies over the years. See how our bills and coins have evolved from appearance to color and size. It's fascinating to see also the limited edition currencies and the ones that were designed but not issued in public for some reason or another.

Marikina Shoe Museum

We've all heard about Imelda Marcos's fascination with shoes. Now it's time to see what they look like - some 749 pairs of footwear owned by the former First Lady. Also on display are shoes owned by other prominent names and personalities. Get to know more about the Marikina's famed shoe industry as well.

Museo ng Kahapon

This cool museum is a pop culture haven for young and adults. Travel back in time by looking at the vintage toys, bottles, memorabilia, posters, signages, and many more. Some of the amusing items you can find here include classic biscuit cans, a discarded ballot box, a Nora Aunor doll, old phones, and cameras, and the Harrison Plaza signage.

Bamban Museum of History

This museum houses an array of war memorabilia such as photographs, artillery, and many artifacts. Visiting this museum will make you appreciate more the sacrifices of our fallen soldiers and ordinary citizens who went out of their way to defend the country.

Bahay Nakpil-Bautista

See firsthand Katipunero artifacts and objects including the chairs sat on by Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, and Jose Rizal when they founded La Liga Filipina in 1892. The house also served as a residence to Gregoria de Jesus (the widow of Andres Bonifacio), and Dr. Ariston Bautista, who was one of the pioneering professors at the University of the Philippines and inventor of medicine against cholera that helped end the cholera epidemic in the country. The original statue of the Black Nazarene also stayed here at the height of World War II. The house was declared as a cultural property on August 25, 2011, by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Distileria Limtuaco Museum

This museum gives a toast to the legacy of Destileria Limtuaco, which is the oldest distillery in the country. Guests will learn how spirits were processed and made in the past. Trivia: the distillery produced the famous White Castle Whisky. Visitors can also see old bottles and personal belongings of the past family members who ran the distillery.
