By Racquel Quieta

Jasmine Curtis-Smith is one of the budding celebrity entrepreneurs in the country. And although she's had some business oversights in the past, she's never lost sight of her dreams. Now, she's ready to launch a new business with still as much fervor as she did before.

In a recent webinar of Manulife titles “Ready, Set #Goals,” Jasmine shared the good news about a new business that she's planning to launch soon.

“So, I'm starting one with a couple of friends, my childhood friends. We're thinking about putting up a line of loungewear and also like candles and all that, things that make you feel relaxed.

“It's like you're at home lang in your little spa, in your own little like utopia with scents and all that.

“So, that's what I'm trying to venture into now after trying out the music industry. I'm moving into like lifestyle and home and like just things that can be made locally as well so that I could support industry workers here.”

Jasmine also admitted that her journey as an entrepreneur hasn't been easy, but she's ready to carry on, armed with the much-needed grit and knowledge, and experience she's gained throughout the years.

“This will be I think my fourth attempt at putting up a business. It's an experimental thing, you know. You won't always get it right the first try sometimes, especially if you're starting out with people with the same level of knowledge as you.

“I think that was the biggest lesson that I've learned, na you also have to be open to people who have bigger knowledge or a bigger background in terms of business and operations, planning, (and) financial.

“So, you know, I think I kind of got ahead of myself in my first few ventures and that didn't go too well, but I've accepted that. I've made peace with that and now I've recovered a little bit financially from that boo-boo and I'm ready to start again.

“And now I'm making sure I can get all the advice, all the like mentoring I can in terms of business. And I've accepted (na) hindi ako a business professional yet in terms of entrepreneurship other than on myself. So, I need to be able to get all the backup and the knowledge that I need.”

Actor-TV host and also host of the webinar Luis Manzano, who's also an entrepreneur himself, gave his two cents about venturing into business.

“If you think about it, even if you ask the mega billionaires, I'm pretty sure that their first attempt wasn't always, you know, the best one. You know, it's still a long process. You may already be successful, you may have every business that you want, but at the end of the day, it's an ongoing journey.”

Venturing into business is indeed a continuous learning process. Even Jasmine's sister, Anne Curtis-Smith, who owns the famous BLK Cosmetics brand and the activewear line Recess, had learned an important lesson on entrepreneurship during the pandemic.

“It was a very tough year. I think a lot of businesses really did suffer, especially with no more foot traffic in malls for us.

“We really had to turn to e-commerce and really rely on that. And of course, hold back on collections being launched, because it just didn't feel like the right time.

“That' why I said earlier 2020 was a tough year, but you know, you just have to put all your creative juices that you may have prepared in 2020 and just throw it into the effort for 2021 as everyone starts to begin their new normal.”
