The aftermath: Social media explodes as Trese's legend grows

By Bong Godinez

The hype surrounding Trese shows no sign of abating.

The dark fantasy series derived from the Filipino graphic novel of the same name had a strong debut on Netflix last Friday, June 11.

Interest has not waned and it seems like everyone--from those familiar with the comic book to people who are just discovering it now--are cheering on Alexandra Trese in her fight against the supernatural.

And by cheering, we mean taking to social media to praise, bash, or make jokes on anything that has to do with the anime show.

When it comes to reactions, fan art (and fittingly so) takes the cake as social media was suddenly inundated with amusing artworks inspired by Alexandra and her gang.

The Facebook page Komikaze PH, for example, posted a fan art showing the heroine in various art styles.

Many also marvel at the visuals that hit close to home or those familiar sights we commonly see around Metro Manila.

A lot of viewers were also drawn to Crispin and Basilio, the half-deity twin brothers who serve as Alexandra's protectors.

And if you're wondering what's the sudden buzz around Chocnut is, you only have the anime series to blame.

Spoiler alert! The character Nuno dishes out supernatural intel and leads to Alexandra in exchange for the beloved Pinoy chocolate snack.

One cake shop even came out with a Chocnut cake for good measure.

Filipino-American actor and singer Darren Criss, who voiced one of the characters in the English version of the series, also posted something on Twitter.

The co-writer of the Trese anime series, Mihk Vergara, meanwhile, encouraged the public to discover more Filipino comic books to support the industry.

We're certainly hoping to see many local comic books get more love in the future.

Meanwhile, here are other Filipino anime series that you should check out:
