Cinderella Obeñita stuns in Diwata-inspired national costume for Miss Intercontinental 2021

By Racquel Quieta

Our very own Cinderella Faye Obeñita, or simply Cindy, dons a stunning Diwata-inspired national costume for the Miss Intercontinental 2021 pageant, and the symbolism it holds are equally beautiful.

The Binibining Pilipinas organization just shared a photo of Cindy looking ethereal in a gold and white Diwata-inspired national costume.

In Filipino culture, a Diwata is a mythical goddess who's often depicted as having unparalleled beauty and mystical powers, and were often protectors of nature.

A Diwata is actually pretty similar to the deities worshipped in ancient times in Egypt, where the Miss Intercontinental 2021 pageant will be held on October 29.

The gold element in Cindy's national costume is a homage to the Philippines' history of being a gold-producing nation, especially in Mindanao where the beauty queen proudly comes from.

The massive gold neckpiece, which sprawls all the way to Cindy's decolletage, was created in collaboration with Mindanao's crown maker Tres Cartera and Ben Torres Metalcraft for its beaten brass component.

Cindy is also said to be gliding with movements from Filipino folk dance Cariñosa for her pose in the lovely photo, choreographed by #TheHouse resident choreographer, Ronald Caron.

In an Instagram post, fashion designer and stylist Odelon Simpao revealed what Cindy's national costume ultimately symbolizes.

Part of Odelon's caption reads: “The whole piece is symbolic of the fighting spirit of this contemporary goddess, the Filipina representative to the Miss Intercontinental 2021 who will bring to the competition what Filipinos are known for on the international stage: triumph and prestige.”
