By Aedrianne Acar

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was declared as pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), has severely affected many businesses, including the tourism and hospitality sector.

In a Senate briefing, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon stated that the Philippines will see a reduction of 1.42 million tourist arrivals due to COVID-19, which translates to billions of pesos of foregone revenues.

She said, "If, for instance, this goes on until June then we're looking at reduction in tourist arrivals of 1.42 million and then 'yung foregone GVA (gross value added) is P93 to 187 billion."

What's worse, Edillon pointed out that 30,000 to 50,000 jobs are at risk if the virus is not contained.

As of Thursday, March 19, the Department of Health (DOH) continues to report rising number of coronavirus cases.

According to the latest data, the Health department recorded 217 patients with the number of recoveries rising to eight, a positive sign but we have a long way to go before returning to normal.

With President Rodrigo Duterte's announcement of a month-long enhanced community quarantine for Luzon, GMANetwork.com collated some of the official announcements of hotels in Metro Manila about their suspension of new bookings and their cancellation policies amid the coronavirus outbreak.
