Full-size moving Gundam takes off in Japan

By Bianca Geli

A life-size full armor Gundam statue has been completed by Japan's Gundam Factory Yokohama and is ready for viewing later this month. The towering statue is based on a Gundam manned robot of the Japanese military science fiction animated series, Mobile Suit Gundam.

The movable Gundam statue is a long-awaited experiment by Gundam Factory Yokohama. The 25-ton Gundam RX-78F00 replica has 24 moving joints and 18 flexible knuckles, allowing it to "walk" and do other movements.

The cultural attraction will be open for public viewing starting December 19, 2020 following the 40th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam TV series.

Visitors can also go to the observation decks of the Gundam Dock (the tower that holds the statue), 15 to 18 meters high, to get a close-up look of the statue. The robot statue will move into different poses every half an hour and will be lit up in the evening, according to the attraction's operator, Evolving G Corp.

A virtual reality dome has likewise been installed at the Gundam-Lab exhibition facility on the site, replicating the experience of sitting inside the cockpit of the 25-ton mobile suit.

Gundam Factory Yokohama's new attraction was scheduled to open in October 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The site will be open until March 31, 2022.
