Time magazine hails Siargao as among the greatest places in the world

The picturesque island of Siargao has landed a spot on Time magazine's World's 100 Greatest Places of 2021 list.

Dubbed as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines,” Siargao is a preferred destination for beach lovers and surfing enthusiasts thanks to its crystal clear turquoise waters, laid-back vibe, and waves.

“While destinations such as Boracay, Cebu, and Palawan nailed the mass market, the teardrop-shaped island off the coast of Mindanao until recently had been best known to a dedicated band of surfers lured by consistent waves,” said the accompanying write-up.

“But the secret is out, and new spots are popping up on the island, including the beachfront Inara Siargao Resort, an intimate five-suite property that can be booked on Instagram.”

Joining Siargao in the list are 99 equally breathtaking destination places including Faroe Islands, Denmark; Gyeongju, South Korea; Hokkaido, Japan; KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa; Lake Kivu, Rwanda; Loira Valley, France; Marrakech, Morocco; and Benguerra Island, Mozambique.

According to Time, the list is a homage to the people and businesses that “found ways to adapt, build and innovate” despite the challenging times brought by the pandemic.

The list was compiled through nominations from the magazine's network of correspondents and contributors from across the world.

Meanwhile, Surigao del Norte 1st District Rep. Francisco Jose Matugas II applauded Siargao's inclusion to the list.

Siargao is within the jurisdiction of the province of Surigao del Norte.

“Thank you Time for the recognition of the creativeness and resilience of the people of Siargao Island,” said Matugas in a statement.
