Hailing from Alejawan, Jagna, Bohol, young singer and multi-instrumentalist Jilean Shain Ocmeja Taghap, popularly known as Shin Shin, is capturing hearts across the country and beyond with her exceptional vocal ability, remarkable musical intelligence, and inspiring journey.
Often described as "small but terrible," Shin Shin possesses a powerful voice, an impressive vocal range, and an emotional depth that leave audiences in awe. Despite her young age, she consistently delivers performances that rival those of seasoned singers, earning standing ovations and widespread admiration wherever she performs.
Shin Shin's passion for music became evident at an incredibly young age. At only two years old, she could already sing Disney's "Let It Go", displaying an impressive sense of melody and rhythm even before she could clearly pronounce every word. By the age of three, she amazed her family by independently playing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on a piano application without any formal lessons, revealing an exceptional ability to recognize and reproduce melodies by ear.
Today, that natural gift has flourished into extraordinary musicianship. In addition to singing, Shin Shin skillfully plays both the piano and violin and is widely recognized for her rare ability to learn songs simply by listening to them a few times—accurately identifying melodies and playing them without sheet music.
Recognizing her remarkable potential, her parents enrolled her at Jabez Music Center, where she formally studied voice, piano, and violin. Throughout her musical training, she consistently excelled during recitals and earned multiple Best Recitalist awards, reflecting both her dedication and exceptional talent.
Her competitive journey began at the age of four, and since then, Shin Shin has built an impressive list of accomplishments. During the GSP Got Talent 2024, she captured the District, Area, and Provincial Championships. She later represented her school in the Bohol Association of Private Schools Elementary Administrators (BAPSEA) Singing Competition, winning the Provincial Grand Champion title in the Preschool Division before successfully defending her dominance in 2025 as the Provincial Champion in the Primary Division.
Most recently, on July 6, 2026, she added another milestone to her growing list of achievements by being crowned the Grand Champion of Alta Citta's Kiddie Singing Star in Bohol.
Beyond the competition stage, Shin Shin's talent has reached millions online. In December 2025, her heartfelt performance of "Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo" (Janine Berdin's version) became a viral sensation on social media. The video has since amassed more than 14.1 million TikTok views and over 1.6 million likes, with engagement continuing to grow.
The performance gained even wider attention after being featured by content creator Nephi Acaling, whose Facebook post generated an additional 7.7 million views. Numerous influencers and online personalities soon shared her performance, expressing amazement that such a young child could possess a voice of such remarkable power, maturity, and emotional expression.
Ironically, the viral video was never intended for public attention. Shin Shin's mother had simply uploaded the clip to TikTok to apply video effects before saving it. With only a small following at the time, the family never imagined that the performance would resonate with millions around the world—a blessing they now gratefully attribute to God's guidance and Shin Shin's God-given gift.
One phrase has become almost synonymous with every Shin Shin performance:
"She gives me goosebumps whenever she sings."
Whether performing live or online, audiences consistently praise not only the strength of her voice but also the sincerity and emotion she pours into every song.
Despite her growing popularity, Shin Shin remains a humble, cheerful, and grounded child. A Grade 3 student at Child and Arts Academy, Inc., she balances academics with music while continuing to pursue her passion under the unwavering support of her family.
She is the eldest of three children of Jimmy V. Taghap and Diocelle Ocmeja Taghap, a public school teacher at Naatang Elementary School in Jagna, Bohol. Music runs deep within the family, as both her mother and grandmother were active singers and competitors during their younger years. Shin Shin has also received vocal coaching from respected mentor Froilan Canlas, known for coaching contestants from "Tawag ng Tanghalan".
Behind the awards and viral success is a little girl with a simple dream. Shin Shin hopes that one day her singing will allow her to visit Hong Kong Disneyland, often asking her mother, "Mama, how many times do I need to sing before we can afford to go to Hong Kong Disneyland?"
Her story is a touching reminder that dreams, when combined with talent, hard work, faith, and family support, can inspire millions.
As she continues to develop as both a vocalist and musician, Jilean Shain "Shin Shin" Taghap remains committed to using her God-given gifts to glorify God, inspire others, bring joy through music, and proudly represent Jagna, Bohol on every stage she graces.
With remarkable talent beyond her years and a heart full of humility, Shin Shin is undoubtedly one of the brightest young musical artists to watch in the Philippines today.
