By Aedrianne Acar

Comedy Concert Queen Aiai Delas Alas joins calls to convince the government not to impose tax to online sellers, who are thriving amid community quarantine due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Aiai started her online business, Martina's Pastries, during the enhanced community quarantine with the help of her family.

In an Instagram post, Aiai expressed her concerns about this issue saying that she and others ventured into online selling to generate income even during this pandemic.

She said, “Para po sa aming mga malilit na online seller sa panahon ng covid ginagawa namin to kasama ng mga iba nating kababayan na wala naman ayuda at walang trabaho to survive sa pang araw araw ng buhay .

“'Wag nyo na sanang isipan na i tax .. salamat po ... and thank you baby boy sa help na i boost ang morale ng mga maliit na business kagaya ng sa amin at sa iba pang negosyong maliliit online ngayung panahon na ito labya bebe boy .. @marvinagustin.”

In a report by GMA News Online, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) released Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 60-2020, requiring “online sellers,” or those conducting business transactions through digital or electronic means, to register their businesses to ensure tax compliance.

The memo reads, “All persons doing business and earning income in any manner or form, specifically those who are into digital transactions through the use of any electronic platforms and media, and other digital means, to ensure that their businesses are registered pursuant to the provisions of Section 236 of the Tax Code, as amended, and that they are tax compliant.”

In another report, DOF Revenue Operations Group Undersecretary Antonette Tionko explained their decision to release this memo.

Tiokno said, “The goal of this project is not to go after online merchants for unreported sales or unpaid taxes. We just want to encourage those who are engaged in online businesses to register with the BIR,”

“Online transactions have increased for quite some time now, especially during the community quarantine period. That's why we want to take this opportunity to remind them to register their businesses. The BIR will issue an Operations Memorandum to this effect.”
