Learn about Kuya Kim's struggles and stories as a young voice talent, here.

Kapuso TV host Kim Atienza recently took the chance to fondly reminisce about his early years in the media.

In an online podcast, Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel, the iconic Kuya Kim reflected on his start as a voice talent or dubber, recalling his involvement in popular shows like Voltes V, Magma Man, Mask Man, and Ultraman.

Looking back, Kuya Kim described the challenges of being a voice dubber, particularly in the '80s and early '90s when digital technology was not yet advanced. He emphasized the meticulous process of syncing voices with character movements without the aid of digital tools.

"During our time, this is in the '80s and early '90s, it took a lot of skill to be voice talent. Mainly because hindi digital noon. Wala pang numero, mano-mano ang editing noon, splicing 'yung tape. Hindi pareho ngayon. The same way when you dubbed in television, we use visual cues and not numbers," he shared.

Kuya Kim explained the technicalities involved in voice acting, including following visual cues and script placement. He highlighted how today's generation benefits from easier recording methods compared to his time when any mistake meant starting over from scratch.

During the podcast, Kuya Kim also revealed how he entered the voice talent industry, initially aspiring to be an on-camera talent despite being scouted for his captivating speaking voice.

"The reason why I got to voice acting, Pia, because I was so passionate about being on-cam talent. Alam mo noong college tayo to be a commercial model, was a real status symbol," he said.

Kuya Kim added, "Lahat ng mga auditions, pinupuntahan ko iyan. Hindi ako matanggap-tanggap. talagang hindi ako matanggap on cam."

Despite his initial focus, Kuya Kim eventually grew to appreciate voice acting, reflecting on the financial independence it provided him as a college student.

As someone still on campus, earning PHP10,000 was already big for him. Kuya Kim happily shared that he used to treat his friends and classmates to food and hang out with them in Malate, Manila.
