Basketball star Calvin Abueva observed Maundy Thursday, April 1, by hopping on his bicycle to visit churches around his hometown of Pampanga.
Calvin, who will be suiting up for the Magnolia Hotshots in the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), is a native of Angeles City in Pampanga.
The controversial power forward posted on Instagram pictures of himself outside the churches that he visited.
Based on the pictures, Calvin stopped by six churches, namely, Santa Rita De Cascia Parish, Immaculate Conception, Betis Church, Saint James the Apostle Parish, San Guillermo Parish Church, Holy Rosary Parish Church, and Sacred Heart Parish Church.
Calvin joined the PBA in 2012 after he was selected second overall in the draft by the Alaska Aces. He was an integral part of Alaska in winning the 2013 PBA Commissioner's Cup title.
He was eventually traded to the Phoenix Fuel Masters in 2018.
Calvin's stint with Phoenix was derailed in 2019 after he was slapped with an indefinite suspension by league officials due to several infractions including an altercation with TNT KaTropa import Terrence Jones.
Calvin said that the 16-month suspension has humbled him and strengthened his faith in God.
He rejoined Phoenix and returned to competitive basketball last year in time for the PBA's resumption in a bubble setup.
It was reported in February this year that Calvin was traded by Phoenix to Magnolia in exchange for Chris Banchero and two draft picks.
Calvin earned his moniker “The Beast” for his toughness on offense and defense while playing for the San Sebastian College - Recoletos Stags in the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA.
Calvin would help the Stags win the NCAA Season 85 championship against the San Beda Red Lions in 2009.
He won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in Season 87 of the NCAA in 2011.
Calvin was in the running to bagged his second consecutive MVP plum in Season 88 but dropped out of the race after he was meted a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game against the Lyceum Pirates in August 2012.
Speaking of the NCAA, the country's premier athletic league is gearing up for its Season 96 happening this year and to be broadcast on GTV and other GMA Network platforms including GMA Pinoy TV for viewers abroad.
