Laurice Guillen featured on a Japanese newspaper as Cinemalaya bags Nikkei Asia Prize

Award-winning actress and director Laurice Guillen was featured on a Japanese newspaper, Nikkei Asian Review, as the Cinemalaya Foundation Inc. (CFI) bagged the Nikkei Asia Prize 2019 for culture and community under her leadership.

The article discusses the revival of the Philippine independent film industry through the help of Guillen, then the head of the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Nestor Jardin, a council member and former head of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and business tycoon Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco.

The CFI president received the Nikkei Asia Prize together with Chairman Cojuangco, Festival Director and Cultural Center of the Philippines Vice President Chris Millado, and Competition and Monitoring Chairman Mel Chionglo during the ceremony held last May 29 in Tokyo, Japan.

The 24th Nikkei Asia Prizes recognized Cinemalaya Foundation Inc. for its tireless efforts in discovering gifted filmmakers and invigorating the Philippine film industry by organizing an annual independent film festival, Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

The award was created and presented by Nikkei Inc., one of the largest media corporations in Japan.
