WATCH: Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao resigns

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

Head coach of Philippine basketball team Gilas Pilipinas Yeng Guiao stepped down from his position on Wednesday, September 11.

After a disappointing FIBA World Cup Campaign in China, Guiao took full responsibility for the team's performance and released a statement on Wednesday afternoon announcing he decided to vacate his post.

On the official Facebook page of Gilas Pilipinas, Guiao writes, “I am sorry we could not deliver a better performance.

"Our players gave their best against talented, bigger, stronger, and better-prepared athletes from the best teams in the world. I truly appreciate their efforts and sacrifices - and that of their families. Our time together will never be erased from my memory.

“In the light of all these developments, I am stepping down, as of today, as the Head Coach of the Gilas Men's Basketball Team, in order to give the SBP a free hand in building and developing a program towards achieving our objective of competing with the best of the best.”

During the World Cup, Gilas went 0-5 and lost to both Tunisia and Iran in the classification phase. And by the Nationals, the team also lost to both Italy and Serbia before dropping to lower-ranked Angola in overtime.

Guiao replaced Chot Reyes last year and even coached the national team in the 2018 Asian Games where the country placed 5th overall.
