Howie Severino donates his blood plasma for COVID-19 patients

By Cherry Sun

Howie Severino has finally accomplished one of his roles as a COVID-19 survivor. He has successfully donated his blood plasma to help patients in their battle against the new coronavirus.

Howie headed to PGH yesterday, May 13, for his donation a week after being medically declared to be fully recovered from COVID-19.

He shared via a Facebook post, “Nearly two months after my first covid symptoms, five weeks after leaving the hospital, and a week after being declared fully recovered, I was able to donate plasma today so my antibodies could be transferred to another patient fighting for their life.”

From COVID-19 patient 2828, Howie is now referred to as donor number 38.

The Kapuso broadcast journalist had his blood plasma extraction away from the hospital to avoid risks of exposure and infection. The procedure was instead done in a classroom near the UP College of Medicine.

Howie posted a few photos from his experience and related, “That machine separated the plasma from my blood and returned the red blood cells to my body. Surprisingly, the liquid gold as the doctors call it is that color. The med techs were handling it like a newborn baby, and they also let me hold it like I was a mother who just gave birth.”

According to his post, blood plasma donors for COVID-19 patients remain to be "a small fraction of the survivors," and he hopes that more potential donors will be encouraged to help.

He continued, saying, “That bag holds 486ml of one of the most precious substances in the world today. Money can't buy it; I was assured it would be given for free to the patient most in need. A committee of doctors decides based on need. An ongoing debate is, do you only give it to the gravely ill or do you also give it to the moderately ill so they don't become worse? That choice becomes less wrenching if more survivors donate plasma, and more patients receive it, which is one reason for doing this story- assuring potential donors that this process is not dangerous or scary, and perhaps one of the easiest ways to save a life.”

Other COVID-19 survivors who have donated their blood plasma include Christopher de Leon and Senator Sonny Angara.
