By Cara Emmeline Garcia

“Great news alert!” wrote Reese Witherspoon yesterday as it has been confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is officially in the works.

The Oscar-winning actress, who played the iconic pink-loving Elle Woods in the two films, shared on Instagram that the sequel was given the go signal and that actress Mindy Kaling will be participating in its screenwriting.

She wrote, “Some things are just meant to be! I'm sooo excited to have @MindyKaling and #DanGoor writing Legally Blonde #! This is #ElleWoodsApproved!”

Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling is also ecstatic with the great news as she will proceed with the project by collaborating with Brookly Nine-Nine creator Dan Goor.

She wrote on her own Instagram account, “Finally some use for my Elle Woods fan fiction! So excited to be reunited with my friends @reesewitherspoon, @laurenneu, and Dan Goor to work on this movie.

“Elle Woods is so iconic, proving you can be girly and smart at the same time. Bend and snap people!”

Release date, characters, and everything we know so far

The very first Legally Blonde movie was released in 2001 and made over $141 million in box office sales worldwide, eventually prompting the second film in the series.

In June 2018, Reese first confirmed that the third movie is officially happening after she posted a video of herself in Elle's signature sequined hot pink bikini leisurely sunbathing on a pool float.

She simply captioned the post with, “It's true… #LegallyBlonde3”

According to a report made by Elle.com, the original producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will work on the film and may collaborate with Reese's own production company Hello Sunshine.

As of this writing, there is no word on who will be directing the film and it's unclear when the movie will hit theaters.

However, IMDB previously stated that pre-production was expected to start in May 2020 but with the addition of new writers and the coronavirus pandemic, it's likely that the movie will be moved a little later than expected.

If you're wondering whether or not the original characters are set to reprise their role, there is no confirmation yet.

In an interview for ET, Jennifer Coolidge, who played Elle's manicurist best friend Paulette in the two films, said she'd return if asked.

She told the interview, “I know that there's a script that's in the works, I'm told. And I keep seeing all this press about it. I hear that it is going, but I just don't know what the timeline is.

“But you know, if I'm asked to do it I'll be in there. I would love to play Paulette again.”

And how about Luke Wilson who plays Elle's husband Emmett? Well, he said he would love to do another Legally Blonde movie, too.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he said, “I have not talked to Reese about it, but yeah I always kind of hear rumors here and there.

“Never anything official about them doing another Legally Blonde, but I'd love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now.”

Although Luke may not be up-to-date with the status of the movie, he does have some thoughts about the script.

He shared the news outlet, “I would definitely have a few children and I just think that it'd be really funny if Reese had a little mini-me, a version of herself. I would think that they'd have a couple of children.”
