Family Time: What happens in a rescue operation for a traumatized dog?

By Aedrianne Acar

Every life counts, including our pets.

Family Time, hosted by Drew Arellano, got the chance to interview Malou Perez, who joined a rescue operation to save a dog named Matthew.

The poor dog was maltreated by his previous owner to the point that the person tried to burn Matthew alive.

Malou, who works as a financial adviser and has a soft spot for our canine friends, recalled Matthew's condition when they rescued him.

In her interview with Family Time, she said, “By the looks of it, it was really purposely burned 'yung mukha ni Matthew. So nandun siya nagtatago siya sa bahay ng reporter, he really looks so traumatized.

“We had a crate ready and then nilagay 'yung food doon sa loob ng crate. He was even too weak to resist rescue. Takot na takot lang siya, talagang nagtago siya doon sa ilalim ng chair and 'yun nga, hindi naman nila naintindihan na ire-rescue pala sila.”

She added that Matthew was in such a poor condition and the injuries he sustained were already life threatening.

“When we got there doon sa location, sarado talaga 'yung mata ni Matthew kasi nga nag-dry na 'yung nana, so hindi niya ma-open 'yung eyes niya, kahit 'yung mouth niya.”

Malou said that she felt a ray of hope when they rescued the dog, since Matthew could sense that he will be alright.

“And 'yun when we lifted the crate and dinala siya sa car nag-open 'yung eyes niya na parang he felt like he was rescued.”

After rescuing the dog, they decided that his condition was pretty serious and he should be treated immediately by a veterinarian.

Malou told Family Time, “Diretso siya sa vet, kasi 'yung gravity talaga ng infection, ang dami-dami din niyang dumi. Alam mo talaga na siguro, like after sinunog 'yung face niya, nagtago siya sa kung saan-saan. As in sobrang dumi niya, ang dami din niyang ticks.

“Pero like the reason why I wanted to bring him to the vet gusto ko talaga siya na ma-IV na, since he was really dehydrated to kasi nga siguro hirap siya kumain, kasi nga hindi niya mabuka 'yung bibig niya.

"So, until now nandoon pa rin si Matthew. Everyday naga-antibiotic siya and then I also bring separate na supplies for Matthew.

“Yung appetite niya is okay naman.”

Despite the traumatic experience of Matthew, Malou is determined to give him a better life and is already excited for him in the future, especially when he finally gets adopted.

“Every time I do rescue operations, I always remain hopeful na the dog will be able to recover and every time I go visit Matthew iniisip ko na talaga kung ano 'yung life na magkakaroon siya pag na-adopt na siya.”
