BLACKPINK's 'Lovesick Girls' music video to be edited by YG Entertainment

BLACKPINK's label YG Entertainment announced that the girl group's music video for “Lovesick Girls” will be edited to remove the scene of member Jennie wearing a nurse's costume.

The move follows after the Korean Health and Medical Union raised concerns that the costume elicits sexual stereotypes about the profession.

“The cap, tight, and short skirt, and high heels are completely different from an actual nurse uniform,” the statement said as reported by Korean outlet OSEN.

“The outfit and portrayal directly imitate the typical sexual stereotype and excuse it as a simple 'costume.'

“Even though nurses are professional healthcare workers, for the sole reason that there are more women in the profession, they have been subject to sexual objectification and derogatory portrayals expressing doubts about their professionalism.”

The union asked for the South Korean entertainment agency to take responsible measures given that the music video continues to dominate charts globally.

As of this writing, “Lovesick Girls” remains at #1 in the Philippines' trending videos on YouTube and has amassed over 127 million views on the video-sharing platform.

While YG's early response was to encourage viewers to think of the music video as “art,” it retracted the said statement on October 7 and declared they will proceed with the editing of the clip.

“We have decided to edit out all the scenes with the nurse uniform in BLACKPINK's 'Lovesick Girls' music video and we will replace the video as soon as possible,” the company said as reported by Soompi.

“While working on the music video for a long time, we didn't expect this issue to be raised because the scenes had no specific intention to them. We feel greatly responsible for this and will consider it an opportunity to deeply learn.

“We relay our apologies to the nurses who felt discomfort and we once again express our respect to all healthcare workers who are working hard for the sake of the health of the citizens.”

YG Entertainment did not disclose any information as to when they will upload the new music video.

Back in July, YG also edited BLACKPINK's music video for “How You Like That” after it used the Hindu deity Ganesha, and are accused of exploiting Indian religion and culture.
